How to Color Block Your Bedroom

D. Palmacci

If you’ve been paying any attention to the fashion world lately, you’ve probably heard the phrase “color blocking” being tossed around. As you might imagine, this trend relies on color to add interest and visual appeal to an outfit. While it’s certainly a great way to spruce up your wardrobe, color blocking can also be applied to interior design. If you’ve been looking for a fun way to redecorate your bedroom, color blocking might be the perfect choice – it’s trendy, simple and can be applied to everything, from bedclothes to window treatments to wall colors.

Two ways to color block
Before you start choosing the perfect curtains and accessories for your space, it helps to get a solid idea of what color blocking entails. According to Refinery29.com, there are two different ways to color block.

1. The first method involves choosing two colors in the same family on the color wheel. This basically means colors that are next to each other. For example, if you’re a fan of warm colors, you might choose orange and red. Cool color choices could be purple and blue.

2. The second way to color block is to pick colors that are complementary to each other on the color wheel. That means shades that are across from each other, like orange and blue or purple and yellow.

Adding another element
After you’ve chosen two colors to work with, you might want to add a bit more depth with a third element. Mohawk HomeScapes recommends mixing in a neutral shade, which can be from any of the following families: beiges, browns, grays, whites and blacks. You might also want to add in a print, which Refinery29.com says can add intrigue. A black and white floral or animal print might be all you need.

Putting it all together
When your colors and prints are chosen, it’s time to decorate with the right elements. Mohawk HomeScapes suggests keeping your furniture neutral – that way, you can update the room if your style ever evolves further. Walls, panel curtains, throw pillows and bedding can easily be updated, so focus on these elements when incorporating your colors and patterns. As long as you stick to the colors you chose, anything goes! Mix and match as you see fit.
