Three tips for using dark window treatments

While there's certainly something to be said about light-colored window treatments with sheer panels, sometimes a room calls for a bit more drama. Using dark curtains can be a great way to add contrast to a room and provide a specific visual illusion, but it has to be done right. Here are three tips to keep in mind when you're opting for darker colors.

1. Pair them with light walls. Dark curtains and walls is a recipe for an oppressed-feeling room that's more dreary than cozy. The contrast of dark and light works nicely and will keep the balance of the space in check.

2. Use them to shrink an airy area. It's great having open rooms with plenty of large windows, but it's often tough to make the room feel comfortable if it's so big. Dark window treatments can make walls feel a bit shorter.

3. Match another accent. To make sure that the decor looks cohesive, it's important that your dark curtains match at least one other accent piece in the room. This will prevent them from looking out of place.
